Renting a Car

Whether you are on holiday or your car is getting fixed you are likely at some point in your driving life to need to hire a car. There are few major companies which come to mind as soon as you think of car hire, but there are also a number of smaller companies which may be able to offer better deals. Finding the best possible deal is important because there a plenty of hidden extras and not all companies make these clear.

When you look for a car rental company it is important to know the right questions to ask for your circumstances and to take the right precautions before you sign up to anything. The following points will give you a head start.

• Choose a car which suits your needs. If you are going on holiday you need a car to fit your family and your luggage. Think about the terrain you will be driving in - will it be snowy or icy for example. Get the smallest car for your needs to keep the cost down.

• Do not take an upgrade simply because the car hire company is convinced you need it. On the same note, make sure you have the size car which you agreed to if you made your booking online. If that isn't available you are due a refund.

• The car rental company will ask you to get insurance. This is within their rights but you have the right to buy it from wherever you want. Shop around online for the best deal for car rental insurance packages. The policy your car rental firm will offer you will be the best deal for them, not you.

• The hire company may try to get you to sign up for extra insurances. Check to see which are compulsory and try to get them included in the insurance you buy yourself. Don't leave yourself without protection however. Make sure you are covered for all of the countries you will be visiting.

• Make sure you fill the car up before you take it back or they will charge you at their prices for the fuel required.

• Pay by credit card so you have some comeback if things go wrong. You may have to pay some sort of administration fee, but it may be worthwhile.

• Check the car carefully before you drive it away and take photos of any scratches , dents or interior stains. Make sure they are noted on the particulars. Go over the car with the company representative when you return it as well.
